The Xi-Amaru Republic at the OAS Inter-American Week of Indigenous Peoples
In August 2026 the Republic joined Indigenous leaders across the hemisphere at the Organization of American States.
Chief Nnakina Xi-Amaru Fears took part in the IX Inter-American Week of Indigenous Peoples, convened by the Organization of American States from August 10 to 14, 2026, under the theme “Roots that sustain, knowledge that transforms.” The Republic contributed a photographic feature on the inauguration of the Aboriginal Ministry of Justice and spoke in the week’s virtual Conversation with the OAS on August 13, 2026.
How the Republic took part
| Photographic feature | Three photographs documenting the inauguration of the Aboriginal Ministry of Justice, shown in the week’s open-theme exhibition. On the programme the community is listed as Xi-Amaru Republic, with the country listed as Amexum (Indigenous Region) / United States. |
| Conversation with the OAS | On August 13, 2026, a virtual session on strengthening participation and dialogue between Indigenous peoples and the OAS. Chief Nnakina Xi-Amaru Fears was given the floor during open discussion and spoke on behalf of the Republic. |
What the Chief said
She described the work the nation has done since 2022: building Indigenous institutions, self-government, community development, and the practical implementation of Indigenous rights. She named lack of knowledge and awareness as the central obstacle, and explained why the Republic verifies everyone who joins:
“The misuse and misrepresentation of Indigenous rights has generated skepticism, which can make legitimate Indigenous institution-building more difficult.”
Chief Nnakina Xi-Amaru Fears, as published by the Aboriginal Ministry of Justice
“We don’t just talk about the declaration — we implement the declaration.”

Why it matters
The American Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was adopted by the OAS General Assembly in 2016, and the Republic’s governance rests on its articles. Taking part in the OAS’s Indigenous programme is direct engagement with the institution that adopted ADRIP. It is participation, not formal recognition; the Republic’s existence does not depend on recognition. See ADRIP and UNDRIP.
“Indigenous peoples, in exercising their right to self-determination, have the right to autonomy or self-government in matters relating to their internal and local affairs, as well as ways and means for financing their autonomous functions.”
